"Board Leadership Orientation"

Norm Spitzig, MCM

Norm’s acclaimed Board Leadership Orientation has been very well-received by many fine private clubs around the country and around the world. While the program is typically customized to meet the specific needs and expectations of each and every individual club, here is a brief overview of the highlights:

  • The presentation typically lasts about two hours, including time at the end for productive questions-and-answers.
  • Topics that are typically discussed include:
    - the core responsibilities of a Board of Directors and the General Manager in the private club environment (with special emphasis/focus on the value/importance of General Manager concept),

    - various governance issues, including practical suggestions for the effective and harmonious use of committees,

    - current trends in the private club industry,

    - "what makes a good club a great club",

    - the results of a recent Master Club Advisors survey of "what clubs are doing in response to today's particularly challenging economic times", and

    - the joint responsibility of the leadership team to appropriately preserve and develop the club's unique culture and traditions.

"Strategic Planning"

In addition to the Board Leadership Orientation, many fine private clubs have engaged Norm to facilitate their club’s strategic plan. (Interestingly enough, in today’s challenging economic times, there has been a resurgence of strategic planning in private clubs. While many clubs have “put a hold” on major capital improvements, more and more clubs understand the critical importance of preparing NOW for when times get better.) Again, while each and every strategic planning gathering is appropriately customized to meet the specific needs of the club in question, a “typical” Agenda resembles the following:

1.      Purpose of Meeting / Review of Meeting Agenda

2.      Board Leadership Orientation

3.      Group discussion of Club’s membership, facilities, operation and governance (identifying “strengths and weaknesses”).

4.      Identification of Opportunities and Critical Success Factors (“those services and facilities the Club absolutely MUST do exceptionally well”)

5.      Development (Reconfirmation) of the Mission Statement (“the core purpose of the Club”)

6.      How Do We Get There? (The "Vision" - what does the Club want to be?)

7.      Within the context of the Club’s defining Mission Statement, what specific goals should the Board of Directors adopt?

8.      How should these goals be prioritized?

9.      What is the feasibility and financial impact of each goal – and how can the club best fund these goals in a way that will maximize the chances of membership acceptance / approval?

10.  Development of a specific Action Plan and accompanying areas of responsibility

"Service and Facilities Audit"

In these troubled economic times, despite active attempts by clubs to continue to grow member rosters and retain familiar faces, membership numbers can still decline. Everyone, in every economic stratum, is taking a long, hard look at how they spend their disposable income, making tough decisions between what is an expendable part of their lives, over what is worth keeping.  As a Club Manager, it is in your best interest to make their decision as easy as possible; to make sure your club is considered an invaluable expense; to make sure your facilities and staff are, unquestionably, top notch, and free of “service quality erosion.”

Experience has taught that this erosion comes about gradually, with both the board and management unable to recognize it.  Usually, it takes a set of “fresh eyes” to resolve this. With that in mind, Master Club Advisors is pleased to offer a new service to put an end to the phenomenon:  the Service and Facilities Audit.

We will tour your property under the guise of a new member or visiting guest and experience any and all services your club offers: From golf to fitness, overnight rooms to food and beverage outlets.   Our tour will be followed by a thorough written report; candidly describing the quality of the experience with suggestions for improvement. We follow a carefully thought out, and specifically applied process to assure all aspects of each department are thoroughly analyzed to assure current and prospective members have the very best experience each time they use your club.

The Service and Facilities Audit has already proven to be a success.  Now is the time for you to take advantage of this service, too!

"Club Operational Audit"

Master Club Advisors's - Operational Audit is especially designed for private clubs that need to hear what’s wrong (as well as what’s right) in their operations from an industry leader who successfully managed private clubs for three decades before becoming a specialized consultant to the private club community.

The scope of the Operational Audit is to review the club’s operations from a management perspective and to provide a financial analysis (including appropriate benchmarking) as well as specific recommendations for improvement.

Following a detailed visit to the club property and interviews with staff, officers, directors and members, and after reviewing requested documentation, MCA’s written report will be organized in sections with each containing an Overview, Current Status and Recommendations.

After the report is delivered, a return visit is arranged to discuss the recommendations and desired implementations.
